Subspecies
Formerly considered conspecific with Plain-capped Ground-tyrant (Muscisaxicola alpinus) by some authors.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

cinereus Philippi & Landbeck, 1864 - Breeds Peru (southern Puno), Bolivia, northern Chile (Coquimbo south to Talca) and western Argentina (Mendoza); southern populations migrate north.
argentinus Hellmayr, 1932 - Andes of north-western Argentina (Jujuy to Catamarca and Tucum�n). Breeds north-western Argentina (Jujuy south to Catamarca); southern populations migrate north.
