d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837

Habitat
Subtropical and tropical dry and high altitude grassland. From 2,200 - 4,500 m, occasionally down to 300 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies occipitalis possibly a separate species, may occur together with pallidiceps (in non-breeding season) and no intermediates between them are known. Further research is required.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • occipitalis Ridgway, 1887   -  Peru (except south-west) and north-western Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Chestnut-naped Ground-tyrant (Muscisaxicola occipitalis).
  • pallidiceps Hellmayr, 1927   -  South-western Peru (Arequipa south to Tacna), northern Chile (Arica south to Antofagasta), south-western Bolivia and north-western Argentina.
  • rufivertex d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1837   -  Breeds in mountains of Chile (Atacama south to Colchagua) and western Argentina (Sierra de Mendoza and Córdoba).
  • achalensis Nores & Yzurieta, 1983   -  Central Argentina (Sierras de Córdoba).
