Derivation
Pach-y-ptil'-a - Gk, pachys, thick; Gk, ptilon, feather: sal-vi-ni - O. Salvin (1835 - 1898), noted ornithologist and authority on sea birds
Habitat
Marine, pelagic, in sub-Antarctic and adjacent Antarctic and sub-tropical waters.
Australia, Chile, French Southern Territories (B), New Zealand, Peru, South Africa (B).
Population
Estimated population is 12,000,000 (2010).

Food
Mostly crustaceans, and small fish with some cephalopods.
Voice
A loud 'ka-kaka-du'. Otherwise not well known.
Nest
A chamber at the end of a burrow, lined with leaves and twigs.
Eggs (Guide)
1; smooth, dull, white, becoming stained; oval; about 49 x 36 mm. Incubation: about 44 - 49 days; by both sexes. No replacement laying.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in 52 - 63 days. Fed by both parents by incomplete regurgitation.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- salvini (Mathews, 1912) - Breeds on Marion and Prince Edward Island and Iles Crozet.
- macgillivrayi (Mathews, 1912) - Iles St Paul and Amsterdam Island. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, MacGillivray's Prion (Pachyptila macgillivrayi).
