Habitat
Open grassland and alpine regions. From sea-level - 5,000 m.

Range (Guide)
Argentina (B), Bolivia (B), Chile (B), Colombia (B), Ecuador, Peru (B), Venezuela (B).

Vagrant to Brazil (NB), Paraguay.

Andes, from Venezuela to Tierra del Fuego, descending to sea level in Peru and Chile.
 
Population
Estimated population is 10,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Human persecution and poisoning are the main threats.
