Habitat
Open lowlands, rocky coasts.

Range (Guide)

Argentina (B), Chile (B), Falkland Islands (Malvinas) (B).

Islets off extreme southern South America, including Staten (Isla de los Estados), Navarino and Cape Horn, and Falkland Is; irregularly to southern and eastern coasts of Isla Grande, Tierra del Fuego.

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010).

Status NT
Human persecution appears to be the main threat.

Food
Primarily a scavenger. Carrion, offal, small invertebrates, young seabirds, newborn lambs.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered to form part of the Mountain Caracara (Phalcoboenus megalopterus) superspecies, but apparently more distinctive than congeners.
