From south-central Chile (í‘uble) and south-central Argentina (Río Negro) south through Patagonia to Straits of Magellan.

Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010).
Status VU
Habitat destruction and degradation through logging and overgrazing since the introduction of sheep and cattle, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Long considered colour morph of Red-backed Hawk (Geranoaetus polyosoma). Alternatively a subspecies of Red-tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis), with which forms superspecies. Some authors also including Eurasian Buzzard (Buteo buteo), Mountain Buzzard (Buteo oreophilus), and Madagascar Buzzard (Buteo brachypterus). Includes synonymous Buteo pictus.
