Chile (B) (NB), Ecuador (NB), Peru (B) (NB).

Humboldt Current zone, from central Ecuador (Guayaquil) to northern Chile (Tarapacá).

Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Little Tern (Sternula albifrons), Saunders's Tern (Sternula saundersi), Yellow-billed Tern (Sternula superciliaris) and Least Tern (Sternula antillarum).
