Adults: Breeding: Face, grey. Supercilium, crisp and white.. Upperaprts, brown. Breast, rufous, with a black breastband. Underparts, white. Bill, brown. Legs, grey-green. Non-breeding: Like breeding adult but supercilium paler, breast darker, breastband very reduced. No grey on face. Often some rufous on breast. Upperparts, unmarked and dark brown. Underparts, white. Bill, brown. Legs, grey-green.
Juveniles: Like non-breeding adult but paler, particularly on breast. Some feathers of upperparts crisply edged buff.
