Large. Medium, straight bill. Sexes alike.
Adults : Upperparts, throat, breast, black. Belly, rump, white. Eyering, yellow. Eye, yellow. Tail, base white. Broad, short, angled white wingbar visible in flight. Underwing primaries, black. Secondaries, outer greater coverts, white. In flight, secondaries are entirely white and the entire inner underwing is white. Bill, bright red with a slightly more orange tip. Legs, pink.
Immatures : Like adult but black parts have brownish edges. Eye, dark. Bill, bright red with a dark tip. Legs are paler.
