Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
inornata (Gmelin, 1789) - Central Alberta and south-western Manitoba south to northern Colorado and western Nebraska. Winters from coastal southern USA to northern South America, mainly on Pacific coast, south to northern Chile.
semipalmata (Gmelin, 1789) - Southern New Brunswick, Atlantic and Gulf coasts of USA, and West Indies. Winters from Atlantic and Gulf coasts of USA and Mexico through Central America and West Indies south to southern Brazil.
