Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland. From 4,000 - 5,500 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru.

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
- latreillii Lesson, R, 1831 - Northern Ecuador.
- simonsi Chubb, C, 1918 - Central Peru (Lima) through northern Chile and western Bolivia to north-western Argentina (Jujuy).
- gayi Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire & Lesson, 1831 - Andes of Chile and Argentina, from Antofagasta and Salta south to Tierra del Fuego.
