Habitat
Inland wetlands, large freshwater lakes. From sea-level - 2,100 m.
Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Falkland Islands (Malvinas), Paraguay, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, Uruguay (B).
Vagrant to St Helena.
Central and southern Chile, and south-eastern Brazil and Uruguay southern through Argentina to Tierra del Fuego. Possibly also Paraguay and Falkland Is.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000,000 (2010).
