Subspecies
Subspecies ruficervix has sometimes been treated as a separate species, but geographical variation in voice remains too poorly known to provide a clear picture of the relationships.

The following 9 subspecies are recognised:

ruficervix (Sclater, PL, 1866) - Western and northern Venezuela, western Colombia and Ecuador.
roraimae Chapman, 1929 - Pantepui of southern Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tepui Nightjar (Systellura roraimae).
atripunctata (Chapman, 1923) - Central and southern Peru, central and south-western Bolivia, north-western Argentina and northern Chile.
decussatus Tschudi, 1844 - South-western Peru and extreme northern Chile.
bifasciata Gould, 1837 - Chile and western Argentina; southernmost populations are migratory, migrating to northern Argentina.
longirostris (Bonaparte, 1825) - South-eastern Brazil, north-western and central Paraguay, north-eastern Argentina and Uruguay.
patagonica Olrog, 1962 - Central and southern Argentina; southernmost populations are migratory, migrating to north-eastern Argentina and Paraguay.
pedrolimai (Grantsau, 2008) - North-eastern Brazil.
mochaensis (Cleere, 2006) - Is. Mocha and Ascenci�n, central Chile.
