Proposed subspecies tertia (northern Peru) tentatively included in nominate, although morphometrically inseparable from atacamensis.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

• koepckeae Berlioz, 1975   -  North-western Peru (Cerro Illescas in south-western Piura).
• vesper (Lesson, 1829)   -  Most of Peru and extreme northern Chile (Tarapacá).
• atacamensis (Leybold, 1869)   -  Northern Chile (Atacama).
