Mountain Velvetbreast (Lafresnaya lafresnayi) [XC251033]
by id from Zamora-Chinchipe: camp on Ventanilla-Christopher Parson trail, Reserva Tapichalaca, Ecuador (call)

Subspecies
Genus apparently close to Oreotrochilus, based on behaviour and external morphology. Population from Paramo de Tama (extreme western Venezuela) often separated as subspecies tamae. Another in northern Peru as subspecies orestes, but probably better considered synonymous with rectirostris. "Coeligena lawrencei" is probably a hybrid with Collared Inca (Coeligena torquata).

The following 8 subspecies are recognised:

  • liriope Bangs, 1910   -  Santa Marta Mts (north-eastern Colombia).
  • greenewalti Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1961   -  Western Venezuela (north-eastern Táchira, Mérida, southern Trujillo).
  • lafresnayi (Boissonneau, 1840)   -  Extreme western Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá in southern Táchira) and eastern and central Andes of Colombia.
  • saul (Delattre & Bourcier, 1846)   -  Andes of south-western Colombia, Ecuador and northern Peru.
  • rectirostris von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1902   -  Northern and central Peru.
  • longirostris Schuchmann, Weller & Wulfmeyer, 2003   -  West-central Colombia.
  • orestes Zimmer, JT, 1951   -  Northern Peru (southern Amazonas).
  • tamae Phelps & Aveledo, 1987   -  Extreme western Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá in southern Táchira).
