Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Ecuadorian Hillstar (Oreotrochilus chimborazo), Green-headed Hillstar (Oreotrochilus stolzmanni) and White-sided Hillstar (Oreotrochilus leucopleurus), and all have been considered conspecific, but separated largely on morphological grounds. White-sided Hillstar (Oreotrochilus leucopleurus) overlaps slightly with present species, and some hybridization reported, but despite this it is the form least frequently lumped into present species. Green-headed Hillstar (Oreotrochilus stolzmanni) frequently considered a subspecies of present species.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
estella (d'Orbigny & Lafresnaye, 1838) - Andes of south-western Peru, western Bolivia, northern Chile and north-western Argentina.
bolivianus Boucard, 1893 - Andes of central Bolivia (Cochabamba).
stolzmanni Salvin, 1895 - Southern Ecuador, northern and central Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Green-headed Hillstar (Oreotrochilus stolzmanni).
