Estimated population is 52,000 - 200,000 (2010).

Subspecies
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • puna von Tschudi, 1844   -  Andes of Peru to north-western Argentina and northern Chile. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Puna Teal (Spatula puna).
  • versicolor (Vieillot, 1816)   -  Southern Bolivia to southern Brazil, and south to central Argentina.
  • fretensis (King, PP, 1831)   -  Central Chile and central Argentina south to Tierra del Fuego; Falkland Is.
