Subtropical and tropical lowland dry grassland and shrubland, high altitude grassland and shrubland, dry savanna, pastureland, arable land. From sea-level - 2,500 m.

Range (Guide)

Argentina, Bolivia, Chile.

Most of Argentina. Also scattered, small populations in eastern Chile.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Nest
A hollow in the ground made by the bird, often situated near a low bush.

The following 10 subspecies are recognised:

intermedia (Dabbene & Lillo, 1913) - North-western Argentina.
magnistriata Olrog, 1959 - North-western Argentina.
riojana Olrog, 1959 - North-western Argentina.
albida (Wetmore, 1921) - Western Argentina.
wetmorei Banks, 1977 - Western Argentina.
devia Conover, 1950 - South-western Argentina.
numida Banks, 1977 - Central Argentina.
multiguttata Conover, 1950 - East-central Argentina.
elegans Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1832 - Central Argentina.
patagonica Conover, 1950 - Southern Argentina, southern Chile.
