Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Peru.

North-central and south-eastern Peru.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

branickii Taczanowski, 1875 - Puna of central Peru (Ancash to Apur�mac).
ornata (Gray, 1867) - Peru to northern Chile and north-western Argentina.
jimenezi J. Cabot, 1997 - Western-central Bolivia (Calacoto, in extreme south-western La Paz) and probably adjacent parts of Chile (extreme north-eastern Tarapac�).
labradori J. Cabot, 1997 - Central Bolivia (Eastern Andes of Cochabamba).
rostrata von Berlepsch, 1907 - Andes of north-western Argentina (Jujuy and La Rioja).
