Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
hormophora Fraser, 1843 - Sierra Leone east to Benin. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, West African Wattle-eye (Dyaphorophyia hormophora).
castanea (Fraser, 1843) - Southern Nigeria to southern Sudan, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania (Bukoba), south to northern Angola (north of 10°S), southern DRCongo (Kasaji, in Katanga) and extreme northern Zambia (Mwinilunga); Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
