Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland dry shrubland, dry forest. From sea-level - 1,500 m, occasionally to 2,700 m.
Ecuador, Peru.
Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Loja Hummingbird (Amazilia alticola), with which formerly considered conspecific; differs in coloration, song repertoire and habitat requirements, with no hybridization yet reported where the two are probably parapatric in southern Ecuador. Subspecies leucophaea frequently misspelt as leucophoea.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- dumerilii (Lesson, R, 1832) - West of Andes from western Ecuador to northern Peru; eastern slope in south-eastern Ecuador (upper Zamora Valley).
- leucophoea Reichenbach, 1854 - North-western Peru.
- amazilia Gould, 1860 - Western Peru.
- caeruleigularis Carriker, 1933 - South-western Peru (Nazca Valley).
- alticola Gould, 1860 - Andes of southern Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Loja Hummingbird (Amazilia alticola).
- azuay Krabbe & Ridgely, 2010 - South-western Ecuador (Río Jubones drainage in Azuay and northern Loja).
