Subspecies
May possibly be related to the superspecies that includes Green-backed Trogon (Trogon viridis), Baird's Trogon (Trogon bairdii), Citreoline Trogon (Trogon citreolus) and Black-headed Trogon (Trogon melanocephalus). Subspecies aurantius has sometimes been considered a separate species, but it intergrades with the nominate subspecies in the Rio de Janeiro area of south-eastern Brazil.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
aurantius von Spix, 1824 - East-central and south-eastern Brazil (south to northern Sío Paulo). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Northern Surucua Trogon (Trogon aurantius).
surrucura Vieillot, 1817 - Eastern Paraguay and north-eastern Argentina east to south-eastern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul); probably also southern into Uruguay.
