Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Waved Woodpecker (Celeus undatus).
Proposed subspecies undulatus, described from R Mocho (R Caura area, south-central Venezuela), is known only from type locality. Now included within nominate.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
grammicus (Natterer & Malherbe, 1845) - South-eastern Colombia and southern Venezuela south to north-eastern Peru and western Brazil. Also French Guiana (Nouragues area).
verreauxii (Malherbe, 1858) - Eastern Ecuador and adjacent north-eastern Peru.
subcervinus Todd, 1937 - Brazil, south of R Amazon, east to lower R Tapajós and south to northern Mato Grosso.
latifasciatus Seilern, 1936 - South-eastern Peru and south-western Brazil (upper R Madeira) south to northern Bolivia (Beni).
