Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist lowland forest. From sea-level - 3,350 m.

Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda.

Vagrant to Mali.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies emiliae and candidus may represent two separate species. Nominate subspecies intergrades with schistaceus in north-eastern DRCongo.

Proposed subspecies sparsimguttatus, described from extreme north-western Tanzania (Bukoba, on western L Victoria), treated as synonym of schistaceus.

The following 6 subspecies are recognised:

  • emiliae Sharpe, 1869   -  Sierra Leone east to Togo.
  • canicapillus (Strickland, 1841)   -  Southern Benin, southern Nigeria and western and southern Cameroon south, including Bioko I (Fernando Póo), to Gabon and PRCongo, east to northern and central DRCongo.
  • schistaceus Sharpe, 1891   -  Southern Sudan, eastern DRCongo, Uganda, Burundi, western Kenya and northern Tanzania.
  • angolensis Bannerman, 1921   -  North-western Angola and southern DRCongo.
  • diabolicus (Reichenow & Neumann, 1895)   -  Montane central and south-eastern Kenya south to northern Tanzania (Crater Highlands, Mt Kilimanjaro).
  • candidus Moreau, 1942   -  Mt Kungwe, in western Tanzania.
