Subspecies
Thought to form a superspecies with Red-fronted Antpecker (Parmoptila rubrifrons) and Jameson's Antpecker (Parmoptila jamesoni), and sometimes treated as conspecific. Occurs close to Jameson's Antpecker (Parmoptila jamesoni) in Central African Republic (R Ouissi) and in DRCongo (Ituri), but the two not known to be locally sympatric.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
woodhousei Cassin, 1859 - Southern Nigeria, southern Cameroon and Gabon east to southern Central African Republic, PRCongo and western DRCongo.
