Subspecies
Original spelling of genus name is "Amblyospitza", but this form has never been used and best regarded as obsolete.
Proposed subspecies woltersi (described from Manhica, in southern Mozambique) is synonymized with nominate; saturata (from Bitye, on R Dja, in Cameroon) and tandae (from northern Angola) with capitalba; and kasaica (from south-eastern DRCongo) and maxima (from Chobe, in Botswana) with montana.
The following 10 subspecies are recognised:
capitalba (Bonaparte, 1850) - Southern Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea, Liberia, central and southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana east to south-western Nigeria, western and southern Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea, northern Gabon, southern Central African Republic, north-western DRCongo, and south-western PRCongo south to north-western Angola.
melanota (Heuglin, 1863) - Southern Sudan, south-western Ethiopia, eastern DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
montana van Someren, 1921 - Interior of Kenya and Tanzania, south-eastern DRCongo, Zambia, Malawi, northern Botswana (Okavango Basin) and north-western Zimbabwe.
unicolor (Fischer, GA & Reichenow, 1878) - Southern Somalia, coastal Kenya and Tanzania, Zanzibar and Pemba I.
albifrons (Vigors, 1831) - Eastern Zimbabwe, central and southern Mozambique, Swaziland and eastern South Africa.
saturata Sharpe, 1908 - South-eastern Nigeria, Cameroon, northern Gabon, northern Congo, south-western CAR, north-western Democratic Republic of the Congo.
tandae Bannerman, 1921 - Northern Angola and extreme western Democratic Republic of the Congo.
kasaica Schouteden, 1953 - Southern Democratic Republic of the Congo (Kasai).
