Forms a superspecies with Red-chested Sunbird (Cinnyris erythrocercus), and both sometimes included in a larger superspecies with Mariqua Sunbird (Cinnyris mariquensis), Shelley's Sunbird (Cinnyris shelleyi) and Black-bellied Sunbird (Cinnyris nectarinioides).
