Subspecies
Subspecies bailundensis intergrades with nominate in northern Angola (Malanje).

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

chrysonotis Swainson, 1837 - From Senegal eastern along coast to southern Togo.
splendidus (Vieillot, 1822) - Southern Benin, Nigeria, Pr��ncipe I (in Gulf of Guinea) and central and southern Cameroon east to southern Sudan and western Ethiopia, south to PRCongo, northern Angola, central DRCongo, Uganda, western Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and north-western Tanzania.
lessoni (Pucheran, 1858) - Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
bailundensis (Neumann, 1920) - Northern and eastern Angola, southern DRCongo and Zambia.
