Subspecies
Genus closest to Stizorhina, the two forming a group which, in turn, is most closely related to New World Myadestes.
Described subspecies pallidigularis (from northern Angola), kakamegoes (from Kakamega Forest, in Kenya) and nigridorsalis (northern Nandi Forest, in western Kenya) all considered indistinguishable from praepectoralis.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
poensis (Strickland, 1844) - Sierra Leone east to Cameroon, Gabon and southern PRCongo, also Bioko I (Fernando Póo).
praepectoralis Jackson, 1906 - Western DRCongo and north-western Angola east to western Uganda and western Kenya.
kakamegoes Cunningham-van Someren & Schifter, 1981 - Western Kenya (Kakamega Forest).
nigridorsalis Cunningham-van Someren & Schifter, 1981 - Western Kenya (northern Nandi Hills).
