Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Congo [The Democratic Republic of the], Côte dIvoire, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania [United Republic of], Togo, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Vagrant to Gambia, Guinea-bissau, Lesotho, Mali, Niger, Somalia.

Population
Estimated population is 100,000 (2010).

Subspecies
May form superspecies with Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis), Henst's Goshawk (Accipiter henstii) and even Meyer's Goshawk (Accipiter meyerianus).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • temminckii (Hartlaub, 1855)   -  Senegambia east to Gabon, Congo and Central African Republic.
  • melanoleucus Smith, 1830   -  Eastern Sudan and northern and western Ethiopia; Gabon and Zaire east to Kenya and south to Angola and South Africa; Pemba and Zanzibar.
