Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Little Sparrowhawk (Accipiter minullus), and sometimes considered conspecific.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

erythropus (Hartlaub, 1855) - Senegambia to Nigeria.
zenkeri Reichenow, 1894 - Cameroon east to western Uganda and south to northern Angola and central Zaire.
