Subspecies
Previously placed in monospecific genus Chelicutia. Subspecies intergrade; a certain amount of geographical variation in dorsal coloration does not seem sufficient to warrant recognition of proposed subspecies hylobia (western Zaire, north-western Angola) and damarensis (southern Angola east to Mozambique and Transvaal).

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

eremogiton Hartert, 1921 - Sahel zone from south-central Mali and northern Nigeria east to Sudan.
chelicuti (Stanley, 1814) - Southern Mauritania to north-western and southern Somalia, south to north-eastern Namibia, Botswana and northern and north-eastern South Africa (Natal).
