Habitat
Freshwater wetlands, including lakes, swamps, marshes, large rivers, river deltas, flood-plains, reservoirs, sewage farms and estuaries.

Vagrant to Chile, Seychelles, Spain.

Tropical America from Costa Rica south to northern Argentina and Uruguay. Africa south of Sahara from Senegal to Ethiopia and south to South Africa. Madagascar and Comoro Is.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,700,000 - 2,800,000 (2010).

Status LC
Hunting and avian disease are the main threats.

Food
Grasses, aquatic seeds, rice, pondweeds and tubers. Also aquatic invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans and insects.

Nest
A depression or low construction of vegetation placed over or at varying distances from water, usually in stands of dense vegetation on dry ground or in reedbeds, occasionally also in open crevices in trees. In solitary pairs with nests about 75 m apart or loose colonies or small groups.
