Central African Republic, southern Sudan, northern Zaire and western Uganda.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Clapperton's Francolin (Pternistis clappertoni), Double-spurred Francolin (Pternistis bicalcaratus) and Harwood's Francolin (Pternistis harwoodi). Has been included in genus Chaetopus. Recently proposed reorganization of Francolinus places present species in genus Pternistis with 23 other species. Proposed subspecies dybowski is an example of clinal variation and does not merit subspecific status.
