Subspecies
Sometimes placed in genus Buarremon or Atlapetes. Has sometimes been treated as conspecific with White-browed Brush-finch (Arremon torquatus). Birds from Sinaloa described as subspecies verecundus, but appear too poorly differentiated to warrant recognition.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
verecundus Moore, 1938 - Mountains of western Mexico (southern Sinaloa, northern Nayarit and southern Durango).
virenticeps (Bonaparte, 1855) - Western, central Mexico.
