Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
simplex (Gmelin, 1789) - Eastern Colombia east to Trinidad, and south through Amazonia; western Ecuador.
chloropoda (Vieillot, 1819) - Basins of R Paraguay and R Paraná south-west to north-central Argentina (Santiago del Estero, very rarely Cordoba). Non-breeding visitor to Uruguay.
