In a cavity in a tree branch or post.
Subspecies
Closely related to Sri Lanka Barbet (Psilopogon rubricapillus), with which forms the so-called "Xantholaema group". Forms described from peninsular India, confusa from north-western and lutea from south-east, synonymous with indica.
The following 9 subspecies are recognised:
indicus (Latham, 1790) - North-eastern Pakistan east to southern China, south to Sri Lanka, Singapore and Vietnam.
delicus (Parrot, 1907) - Sumatra (Indonesia).
roseus (Dumont, 1816) - Java and Bali (Indonesia).
haemacephalus (P. L. S. Müller, 1776) - Northern Philippines (Luzon and Mindoro).
