Subspecies
Formerly treated as conspecific with Eastern Striped Manakin (Machaeropterus regulus), but differs markedly in voice and, to lesser extent, in plumage.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
zulianus Phelps & Phelps Jr, 1952 - North-western Venezuela (Zulia, and north-western Barinas south to Táchira).
obscurostriatus Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - Western Trujillo and western Mérida, in north-western Venezuela.
antioquiae Chapman, 1924 - Western and central Colombia.
striolatus (Bonaparte, 1838) - Eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, north-eastern Peru (south to northern Ucayali) and adjacent western Brazil (east to region of R Urucu, in central Amazonas).
aureopectus Phelps & Gilliard, 1941 - South-eastern Venezuela and adjacent western Guyana.
