Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Somali Bunting (Emberiza poliopleura). Geographical limits between some subspecies disputed.
Proposed subspecies kalaharica (described from Tsotsoronga Pan, in north-eastern Botswana) and carychroa (Langata Forest, in south-central Kenya) here included within nominate. Designated type locality of species may well be in error, as there is no evidence that the species ever occurred this far west.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
flavigaster Cretzschmar, 1828 - Sahel from Mauritania east to northern Ethiopia and Eritrea.
flaviventris Stephens, 1815 - Southern Sudan south through south-central and eastern Africa to Botswana and South Africa.
princeps Clancey & Winterbottom, 1960 - Southern Angola and Namibia.
kalaharica Roberts, 1932 - Southern South Sudan and central and south-eastern Angola south to north-eastern Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, and northern South Africa.
