Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • uropygialis Sharpe, 1869   -  Guinea-Bissau, extreme south-western Mali, south-eastern Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Benin and south-western Nigeria.
  • fusconotus Fraser, 1843   -  South-eastern Nigeria, Bioko I (Fernando Póo), southern Cameroon and extreme south-western Central African Republic east to Uganda and western Kenya, south to Gabon, PRCongo, northern Angola, south-western and south-central DRCongo, Rwanda and Burundi.
