Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

tricolor (Hartlaub, 1854) - Sierra Leone, south-eastern Guinea, Liberia, southern Ivory Coast, southern Ghana and southern Togo east to western and southern Cameroon and extreme south-western Central African Republic, south to Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, northern and western PRCongo, extreme northern Angola (Cabinda) and extreme south-western DRCongo (mouth of R Congo).
interscapularis Reichenow, 1893 - Locally in north, central and north-eastern DRCongo and south-western and southern Uganda, also north-western Angola (Cuanza Norte).
