Food
Insects. Berries and fruits in autumn.
Voice
A harsh 'charr'. Song, a short, rich warble with harsh call notes mixed in.
Nest
A loose collection of dead grass, in the fork of twigs, lined with fine roots and hair.
Eggs (Guide)
Usually 5, pale whitish- or greenish-grey, finely speckled with darker greys.
Subspecies
Geographical variation slight and mostly clinal. Subspecies merzbacheri intergrades widely with nominate in region of Urals and elsewhere.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- nisoria (Bechstein, 1795) - Breeds central Europe (north to southern Scandinavia and southern Finland) east to southern Ural Mts and R Ural, south to eastern Italy, Balkans, northern Turkey and northern Iran. Non-breeding eastern Africa.
- merzbacheri Schalow, 1907 - Breeds south-western Siberia and northern Kazakhstan east to south-eastern Mongolia, and southern locally in central Asian mountains to northern Afghanistan and western China (western Xinjiang). Non-breeding eastern Africa.
