Subspecies

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • atripennis (Swainson, 1837)   -  Gambia and Senegal south to Liberia.
  • rubiginosus (Blyth, 1865)   -  Southern Ivory Coast east to central and southern Nigeria and western Cameroon. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-crowned Capuchin Babbler (Phyllanthus rubiginosus).
  • bohndorffi (Sharpe, 1884)   -  Southern Central African Republic and north-eastern DRCongo east to south-western Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Grey-caped Capuchin Babbler (Phyllanthus bohndorffi).
