Subspecies
Has been placed in genus Trichastoma and in Malacocincla. Subspecies iboensis and moloneyana have been thought possibly to represent a separate species. However, latter appears to intergrade with subspecies gularis in Ghana.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
gularis Sharpe, 1870 - South-western Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone east to south-western Ghana.
moloneyana (Sharpe, 1892) - South-eastern Ghana east to south-western Nigeria.
iboensis (Hartert, 1907) - South-eastern Nigeria and south-western Cameroon. Also (probably this race) in central Nigeria (Jos Plateau).
fulvescens (Cassin, 1859) - Southern Cameroon south to southern PRCongo, extreme western DRCongo, also western Central African Republic.
ugandae (van Someren, 1915) - South-central Central African Republic and eastern PRCongo east through DRCongo to southern Sudan, Uganda, western Kenya and western Tanzania, also north-eastern Angola.
