Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Black-headed Rufous-warbler (Bathmocercus cerviniventris) and has been treated as conspecific.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
rufus Reichenow, 1895 - Southern Cameroon south to central and south-eastern Gabon, east to south-western Central African Republic, northern PRCongo and extreme north-western DRCongo.
vulpinus Reichenow, 1895 - North-eastern and eastern DRCongo, southern Sudan, Uganda, western Kenya and north-western Tanzania.
