Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Cisticola guinea and formerly treated as conspecific, but differs in vocalizations, plumage (especially non-breeding) and habitat preferences. When the form now known as "Cisticola guinea" was initially split from present species, confusion regarding its identity led to its being associated with subspecies mongalla, with the result that the newly split species was mistakenly named "Cisticola mongalla".

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

ruficeps (Cretzschmar, 1827) - North-eastern Nigeria, northern Cameroon, Chad and south-western Sudan.
scotopterus (Sundevall, 1850) - Central and south-eastern Sudan and north-western Eritrea.
mongalla Lynes, 1930 - Southern Sudan and northern Uganda. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Mongalla Cisticola (Cisticola mongalla).
