Subspecies
Populations from northern Cameroon east to western Kenya often separated as subspecies emini (described from Uganda), supposedly somewhat more violet on rump and slightly longer-tailed than those in west of range. However, variation appears to be clinal, and further study required.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • chalcurus Nordmann, 1835   -  Western, central, esst-central.
  • emini (Neumann, 1920)   -  Eastern Cameroon to south-western Sudan, South Sudan, extreme north-eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, northern Uganda, and extreme western Kenya.
