Subspecies
Previously considered conspecific with Equatorial Akalat (Sheppardia aequatorialis).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

houghtoni Bannerman, 1931 - Sierra Leone, southern Guinea, Liberia and western Ivory Coast.
cyornithopsis (Sharpe, 1901) - Southern Cameroon and south-western Central African Republic south to Gabon and PRCongo.
lopezi (Alexander, 1907) - Northern and eastern DRCongo and western and southern Uganda.
