Subspecies
Subspecies batesi has been considered by various authors to be closely related to race graueri of Black-eared Ground-thrush (Geokichla camaronensis), to which it is very similar in plumage.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

princei (Sharpe, 1873) - Eastern Sierra Leone and Liberia east to Ghana.
batesi Sharpe, 1905 - South-eastern Nigeria, western and southern Cameroon and northern Gabon; eastern DRCongo and western Uganda.
