Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Little Yellow Flycatcher (Erythrocercus holochlorus) and Livingstone's Flycatcher (Erythrocercus livingstonei).

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

  • nigeriae Bannerman, 1920   -  South-western Mali and north-eastern and southern Guinea east to SWGhana, southern Benin and south-western Nigeria.
  • mccallii (Cassin, 1855)   -  South-eastern Nigeria east to south-western Central African Republic, south to Gabon, PRCongo and north-western Angola (Cabinda), also central DRCongo.
  • congicus Ogilvie-Grant, 1907   -  Eastern DRCongo to western Uganda.
